Comment by player 2 : Thibault de Vassal :

Ciao Gaetano ! Thanks for your thoughts about our game... Really surprising, I must say. Here are mine : First of all, you made the best choice by complicating the position since 7.Nxg6 .. 12. .. O-O-O was probably really dangerous (brrr), I hoped to create an attack on your kingside that I never managed to organize.. The position was really hard to understand for me between move 16 and 24 .. after that, the game was probably completely lost anyway ! .. my moves had no sense and in my opinion d5! may have been even better before move 26, with almost no hope for black.. but then yes, I played some interesting defenses, White must be very accurate, you did it and I thought it was a lost game for Black anyway ! At 44. ... Rf6, actually I looked so many lines, but everything was bad until I found this interesting king's journey that gave me the hope of a draw.. that wasn't a draw, actually that was :)

You wrote : 69…g3; 70.Bh3 Rh2! (also 70…Rc2 probably draw); 71.Rxf3 Rxh3; 72.b5 Rh5; 73.Kb4 Rg5; 74.Rf1 Rg4; 75.Kc5 Rg5; 76.Kc6 Rg6 =

And actually, it seems you are true ! 70. ...Kc2 ?? , Rh2 was ok too IMO, but I chose Kc2.. so incredible to lose such a game at move 70... I was so sure it was a draw (and it was) that I just played too fast, too confident and this was a fatal error... What an ending anyway.. Finally I'm really glad with this game that I defended quite well after some bad moves in the middlegame.. But once more, you completely deserved that victory :)

This tournament was really hard for me.. I played some bad moves in a difficult opening against Alberto and I realized that my strategy with White in the openings was not efficient anymore. It seems that the correspondence chess level increased this last year, so I have to change something quickly ;)

Thanks for the game, the analysis and the lesson... Congratulations for your outstanding results in these WCH tournaments and best wishes in the end of this 1st FICGS WCH cycle :)
