The King's Indian Attack (KIA) can be reached by different routes (usually by 1.e4, 1.Nf3 or 1.g3). Often the KIA is reached via 1.e4 followed by d3, Nd2, Ngf3, g3, Bg2, and 0-0, an example being 1.e4 e6 2.d3 (this is possible against almost any opening move -- 1...c6, 1...c5, etc.) d5 3.Nd2 followed by Ngf3, etc.
Since the KIA is a closed, strategic opening choice, many 1.e4 players prefer to play sharper, more open variations. When played after 1.e4, the KIA is most often used against the semi-open defences where Black responds asymmetrically to e4, such as the French Defence, Sicilian Defence, Caro-Kann Defence, etc. The KIA is less often played against 1.e4 e5, where most White players prefer to play more aggressive lines such as the Ruy Lopez. The King's Indian attack is considered to be one of the most solid opening choices for White, but not very aggressive. It is similar to the King's Indian Defense with colors reversed. White's plan is usually to either push the d and e pawns up a rank as the game progresses in order to bind the opponent. If Black castles king-side, White often follows up with h4 and a king-side pawn storm, placing his king at h1 if needed. If Black castles queen-side, White can move his knight to c4 and attack on the queen-side. According to Chessbase, white chances are about 55% ============ Contributors : Thibault de Vassal [ECO "A00"] [Opening "Benko's Opening"] d5 : 165 games, White ELO av : 1774, Black ELO av : 1787 1-0 : 33.3% , 1/2-1/2 : 25.5% , 0-1 : 41.2% e5 : 99 games, White ELO av : 1749, Black ELO av : 1751 1-0 : 34.3% , 1/2-1/2 : 23.2% , 0-1 : 42.4% Nf6 : 25 games, White ELO av : 1701, Black ELO av : 1696 1-0 : 28% , 1/2-1/2 : 16% , 0-1 : 56% c5 : 23 games, White ELO av : 1956, Black ELO av : 1934 1-0 : 22.7% , 1/2-1/2 : 31.8% , 0-1 : 45.5% g6 : 17 games, White ELO av : 1525, Black ELO av : 1578 1-0 : 47.1% , 1/2-1/2 : 0% , 0-1 : 52.9% c6 : 10 games, White ELO av : 1618, Black ELO av : 1561 1-0 : 40% , 1/2-1/2 : 10% , 0-1 : 50% h5 : 5 games, White ELO av : 1677, Black ELO av : 1449 1-0 : 60% , 1/2-1/2 : 0% , 0-1 : 40% d6 : 4 games, White ELO av : 1988, Black ELO av : 1596 1-0 : 50% , 1/2-1/2 : 25% , 0-1 : 25% f5 : 4 games, White ELO av : 1979, Black ELO av : 1997 1-0 : 50% , 1/2-1/2 : 50% , 0-1 : 0% e6 : 3 games, White ELO av : 2023, Black ELO av : 2155 1-0 : 33.3% , 1/2-1/2 : 66.7% , 0-1 : 0% g5 : 3 games, White ELO av : 1823, Black ELO av : 1855 1-0 : 100% , 1/2-1/2 : 0% , 0-1 : 0% Nc6 : 2 games, White ELO av : 1612, Black ELO av : 1512 1-0 : 100% , 1/2-1/2 : 0% , 0-1 : 0% b6 : 2 games, White ELO av : 1578, Black ELO av : 1550 1-0 : 100% , 1/2-1/2 : 0% , 0-1 : 0% a6 : 1 game, White ELO av : 1855, Black ELO av : 1907 1-0 : 0% , 1/2-1/2 : 100% , 0-1 : 0% h6 : 1 game, White ELO av : 2045, Black ELO av : 1947 1-0 : 100% , 1/2-1/2 : 0% , 0-1 : 0% See this chess line with the javascript viewer
