What is Open Graph?
Hi, I just would like to know what is Open Graph, the new project by Facebook. I still don't know what it is exactly, but I learnt that Google's Matt Cutts & many people deleted their Facebook accounts since they learnt that, does anybody know why? Thankx. franklinjoe (2010-06-08 11:59:48) What is Open Graph? Social networking site Facebook's latest API update, dubbed "Open Graph," is generating diverse debate — about its genuine "open"-ness, its impact on other web services, and (like other Facebook initiatives before it) it's privacy and security approach for users. Those issues can get conflated if not properly addressed, however, so it is vital to take a close look at what Open Graph is in order to make a solid critique. In addition to that, WHATWG is working on an alternative semantic markup scheme called Microdata that encodes metadata in HTML attributes rather than in <meta> tags. This technique makes it possible to mark up multiple items in a single page, rather than limiting each page to a single object as in OGP." First of all, the microdata spec is maintained jointly by the WHATWG and W3C, as with HTML5 itself. The current W3C Editor's Draft is at <ht*p://dev.w3.org/html5/md/>. Originally microdata was part of the HTML5 spec itself, but the HTMLWG decided (after lots of arguing) to move it to a separate spec, like the HTML+RDFa spec <ht*p://dev.w3.org/html5/rdfa/>. At the WHATWG, microdata is still part of the HTML5 spec proper <ht*p://www.whatwg.org/specs/web-apps/current-work/multipa...>. Second of all, microdata is not competing with OGP, but with RDFa. Microdata is a way to embed any kind of metadata you like into HTML pages, just like RDFa. Most things you'd want to do with RDFa-in-HTML can also be done with microdata, just with different syntax. E.g., if Facebook had decided to release OGP as microdata instead of RDFa, it would probably be something like <html itemtype="ht*p://opengraphprotocol.org/schema/" itemscope=""> <head> <title>The Rock (1996)</title> <meta itemprop="title" content="The Rock"/> instead of <html xmlns:og="ht*p://opengraphprotocol.org/schema/"> <head> <title>The Rock (1996)</title> <meta property="og:title" content="The Rock"/> This uses <meta> tags, but both RDFa and microdata support putting their respective attributes on other tags too, and indeed this is encouraged. I'm pretty sure you don't actually have to use <meta> in OGP as things stand -- you could do something like <title property="og:title">The Rock</title> and it should work as you expect, as far as I understand it. If not, it should be something like that. (Microdata is again the same, but with itemprop instead of property.) The OGP examples use only meta tags, but if Facebook is actually using a conformant RDFa implementation (which maybe they aren't), you shouldn't have to use those. Similarly, RDFa supports having many different objects on the same page, as far as I know, and if Facebook doesn't support that, microdata won't make any difference. __________ Outdoor kitchen | Outdoor kitchens | Outdoor barbecue sunilsamuel (2011-11-09 09:56:42) 13 years ago Social networking site Facebook's latest API update, dubbed "Open Graph," is generating diverse debate — about its genuine "open"-ness, its impact on other web services, and (like other Facebook initiatives before it) it's privacy and security approach for users. The producer can instead add semantic tags to any web page that identify it as a particular entity in Facebook's database, and add widgets to the page with which Facebook-using visitors can interact (including adding themselves as fans). __________ bullet proof vest santiago (2013-04-26 08:42:18) 11 years ago The Open Graph lets apps tell stories on Facebook through a structured, strongly typed API. People use stories to share the things they're doing, the people they're doing them with and the places where they happen. Open Graph lets you integrate apps deeply into the Facebook experience, which increases engagement, distribution and growth. __________ Cheap Rack Cards Printing See also ficgs More websites You must register to see these links, as this is a collaborative page, then you may change the order of the links by clicking the icons before the titles. admin Other websites The following links might be less relevant, please change their ranks if you find them useful. * ?
