Microsoft Office or Open Office ?

Hi,

I would like to know which software is best to make documents in formats .doc or .xls

Before I was used to Microsoft Office Word & Excel but I have a new computer with Windows Vista and it is not free anymore. On the other hand it seems that Open Office is quite slow, but I've not tried it yet. Is there a way to download an old version of Microsoft Word, Excel & Powerpoint for free on the internet ?
