Colombian minister Juan Manuel Santos announced a few hours ago in Bogota that Ingrid Betancourt, colombian politician, former senator and anti-corruption activist, Thomas Howes, Marc Gonsalves, Keith Stansell and eleven soldiers were freed in Guaviare region of Colombia by Colombian security forces in Operation "Jaque". Ingrid Betancourt was kidnapped by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) on February 23, 2002 while campaigning for the Colombian presidency in an area of high guerrilla presence in spite of warnings from the government, police and military.

Ingrid Betancourt est née à Bogota le 25 décembre 1961, fille de Gabriel Betancourt, ancien ministre colombien de l'Éducation sous la dictature du général Gustavo Rojas Pinilla, et de Yolanda Pulecio, ancienne reine de beauté du département de Cundinamarca devenue sénatrice.
