Comments anyone?

Hi Thib, I was wondering two things about the comments. First, can you please refresh them with each page refresh? Unless we refresh manually, we can't see if someone wants our attention or a game. Second, can you make it so only you or the person who wrote a specific comment can erase them? There is someone who gets perverse enjoyment out of erasing comments here, sheesh, :)

I second both of these suggestions about the Chat feature! I've asked about the second one before. No one but the writer or the moderator should have the right to delete a Chat comment.

Hi Scott, sorry about this, happens from time to time but I keep an eye on this. It shouldn't last...

I cannot satisfy the second suggestion, it would be too dangerous as the chat bar is visible on the whole site, I prefer by far everyone to be able to delete spam or insults... However I may refresh the chat bar every 5 minutes or so... To be continued.

Spam, insults or whatever would be visible on the whole site during hours, maybe more. It happens not so often but it may happen (that's why most sites do not have such a chat bar).

Thib - can you see who has removed messages? If so, perhaps you can caution people who remove them for no obvious reason, and remove their ability to do so or ban them from the site if necessary.

On nearly every site I know only the moderator and the author are able to delete a comment. Other persons only can ask the mod to delete a comment, when they tell the reason why (abuse of "free speech" to miscredit someone f.e.).
I think, this should be here the same. When I do not like a comment, I might answer - or ignore it.

Good reasoning Thib, I understand now. Maybe a private chat option, so we could ask someone for a game that would appear on their screen right away. Or just to talk to them without everyone seeing....

Scott, that should be the function of a private messaging service. But the pm function here is not quite up to that standard. Yet I hope.

I like Jimmy's suggestion. Pick a few members whose judgement you trust and allow them to delete any message. Many sites have have more than one moderator -- one person cannot be online 24/7, not even Thib ;-)

William got it, that's exactly what I do (cautionning people). Those chat messages are not so important, that's why I think working this way is fair & efficient enough. Having even 10 moderators wouldn't be ok for this IMO.
