Comment activer les cookies firefox IE ?

Bonjour, je voudrais simplement savoir comment activer les cookies sous Firefox et sur IE7, ils sont apparemment obligatoires pour aller sur certains sites et je ne sais pas comment ni pourquoi ils sont désactivés sur mon ordinateur. Un cookie sert à quoi exactement, il y a un danger pour la machine ou pas ?
